On 18 December 1942 the Group lost the one and only ship it was to lose flying overseas during their initial deployment. Aircraft 41-17791 piloted by 2nd Lt. William R. Telesmanic roared down the runway, disappeared into the haze, and was never seen again. A former All-American tackle from the University of San Francisco, Telesmanic and his crew apparently went down in the ocean between Ascension Island and the African Gold Coast village of Accra. An extensive search failed to find a trace. Crew members included:
